OBJECTIVE: TO MAKE A BASE
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1. Magnessium Ribbon 2.
Porcelain Basin
3. Litmus Paper (Blue) 4. Phenolphthalein
5. Beaker 6.Water
THEORY
Some metals like magnesium, iron, sodium when burn in oxygen,
react with oxygen to form their oxides which dissolve in water to form alkalis.
These oxides are called basic oxides. Magnesium metal burns in oxygen and
reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide.
Magnesium
+ Oxygen Magnesium oxide
2
Mg + 02 2MgO
Magnesium oxide dissolves in water to some extent to form
magnesium hydroxide, an alkali.
Magnesium
Oxide + Water Magnesium hydroxide
MgO + H2O Mg (OH)2
OBSERVATION
Magnesium
reacts with oxygen present
in air and forms a white substance called magnesium oxide. This magnesium oxide is a base (MgO). After dissolving in water it forms an alkali, Mg
(OH)2.Which turned RED litmus paper into BLUE. When few drops of
PHENOLPHTHALEIN were added, it was turned into pink.
CONCLUSION
During this experiment we made a base.
